Chicago, IL, October 4, 2006TMS To Launch New Latino Comic Strip By Ex-NYC Cop Peter Ramirez

Raising Hector, a new daily comic strip about a Latino family, will begin syndication for newspaper comics pages and their websites, Tribune Media Services (TMS), the content-licensing unit of Tribune Co., has announced.

Officials say the strip could fill a gap in the comics lineup with the departure of the popular strip Boondocks.

In the strip's multigenerational Latino family, macho ex-cop and dad Hector plays Mr. Mom at home with the kids and dog, while his wife is out working, and his parents are underfoot. Readers of all ages will find a character to empathize with or recognize in their own family. The strip will also be made available in Spanish for domestic and international Spanish-language publishers.

Peter Ramirez, the artist and writer for Raising Hector, is living his comic strip. One of six children raised by his single mother in New York City, Peter Ramirez's childhood escape was reading comic books and the newspaper funny pages. He was the first person in his family to graduate from college. He then became a New York City police officer, rising to the narcotics division. After being injured in the line of duty, Ramirez found himself in a position he never expected--stay-at-home dad. During his first months at home, after realizing the transition was not as easy as he thought (though not without its comic moments), Ramirez poured his day-to-day life into Raising Hector.

"We believe that Raising Hector is a cultural touchstone that reflects America's changing demographics," said Mary Elson, managing editor of TMS. "It is a comic strip that feature editors have been looking for to fill this reader interest."
